     I expect, however, there is a big whack of time (relatively speaking) 
     spent after execution terminates (i.e. after the last print statement 
     in the code) before the code terminates and the prompt is returned.

Could you call _exit(2) to see if it is libc?
Do you have any shared memory segments that have to be written out?
