  Hello to all:

The HP Caliper team announces the release of:

HP Caliper Version 3.8 for HP-UX and Linux

Some of the new features available in this release of HP Caliper are:

o A preview release of the new HP Caliper Advisor, a rules-based expert
system, is available. The Advisor gives guidance about improving the
performance of an application. See the chapter on the Advisor in the "HP
   Caliper User Guide" for details.

Advanced users can also write their own performance rules. See the new
"HP Caliper Advisor Rule Writer Guide" for details.

o Parts of HP Caliper were significantly redesigned for this release,
specifically to improve HP Caliper's performance during data collection
and to reduce perturbation of measured processes.

o The cpu_metrics configuration (for HP-UX users) has been enhanced,
with real-time display of CPU metrics and expanded help text for
reports, including descriptions of all the event sets you choose.

o There are three new options: --cpu-metrics-aggregation,
   --measure-on-interrupts, and --term-display.
See the man page and the "HP Caliper User Guide" for details.

These features (first released in Version 3.7) are also available in
this release:

o A new sampled call graph report is available, using a new
   configuration file called scgprof.

o The ability to measure your program's memory usage has been improved.

o The CPU Metrics feature has been enhanced to measure multiple metrics
   in a single run.

o You can use the --join option to combine (aggregate or merge)
performance data from data files containing data for multiple processes.

o System-wide mode now has support for dynamically-loaded kernel modules.

The HP Caliper team would like your help in planning features for
upcoming releases of the tool. We would particularly like to hear from
users of performance measurement tools in the HP-UX and Linux developer
community. Are there features that you find lacking or inadequate in HP
Caliper? We also want to hear about specific bugs or problems in using
the tool.

Please forward any feedback or comments to caliper-help@cup.hp.com .

  Thanks,

    HP Caliper Development Team
