Don't expect the default values to be big enough.  Though it may be
better on the latest OS.

This is a kernel parm, it depends on the OS or your system admin.

You can use:
$ /usr/sbin/sysdef | fgrep maxd
$ /usr/sbin/kmtune | fgrep maxd
