I don't think any debugger stopped in $START$. They either went to main
or never stopped anywhere. Hmm, I guess dde wanted to start the process
and that is the first instruction.
What are you really trying to do?
>(gdb) b '$START$'

This seems a bug. This used to work even in xdb. Please contact the
Response Center and file a bug report.
You can set a breakpoint in _start.
If you have shared libs, you might try "catch load".
