We have a program where a parent process has a blocking wait on a child
for a string to be passed back (via stdout). On a certain host it fails by
means of the parent waiting forever. This host is new so one of our
thoughts was that it was a kernel parameter (though it could also be a
patch we haven't applied), since this program works fine in our
traditional environment.

Is there a kernel parameter related to such a situation?
