Kory-
You can read about the kernel parameters at this location...

<http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/os/KCparams.OverviewAll.html>
The hard file limit is maxfiles_lim and you can read about it here...

The easiest way for a novice to configure kernel tunables is to use SAM.
Type
sam
from the command prompt. This will bring up either a Motif gui or ASCII
interface. Use the Kernel Configuration selection and then the Configurable
Parameters selection. Find your desired parameter in the subsequent list
and resize it.
maxfiles_lim is a dynamic tunable in HP-UX 11i (11.11 via uname) but may
require a reboot in 11.0, I don't remember exactly.
If it is a dynamic tunable SAM will make the change and you are done. If
not, it will require a rebuild of the kernel and a reboot, but SAM will take
care of this for you. The menus in both interfaces are fairly intuitive and
they let you back out without committing changes. Move slowly and when you
feel you have got it, go for it.
(The exact Icons and Menu choices may not be the same, I am naming them from
memory, but they should be intuitive either way.)
Of course, you need to be the superuser to perform these changes...Good
luck!

Subject: HPUX-DEVTOOLS: PR_PROC_DESC_TABLE_FULL_ERROR
I have installed Enterprise server 6 on my HPUX11 HP b2000 workstation and
when I start the server everything seems fine, but I receive this error in
te error log, dealing with tuning a Operating System parameter. This is the
error :
The server configuration may require more file descriptors than the
operating system pr
ovides. If you encounter PR_PROC_DESC_TABLE_FULL_ERROR errors, you may wish
to increase the operating system hard file descrip
tor limit from 2048 to 5763 (see your operating system documentation) or
decrease one or more of the following settings: MaxFil
es in nsfc.conf and ConnQueueSize, RqThrottle, and MaxKeepAliveConnections
in magnus.conf.
How do I tune the kernal to add more file descriptors on my HPUX 11
workstation. I have never tuned the kernal on it before.
