Dear List,

The I/O problem I asked about (repeated below) is solved.  As one list member
suggested, "check the ulimit".  I had checked the shell and system ulimit (it 
was set to a huge number) BUT the user didn't mention that he had run this 
particular job with a shell script that someone else wrote and he modified for 
his particular (large) application.  The first two lines of the script:

#!/bin/ksh
ulimit 200000

Ugh! This limited the output file creation to 100,000,000 bytes.

Thanks to the gentleman who sent me email (I accidentially deleted his email
before noting his name -- but he still has my thanks!)
