Here is the original question.

Admins,

I can't send an email using mailx. I can send to our local email server but can not \
send to an email address on the internet.

This is the way I am trying to send it.

cat /etc/hosts | /usr/bin/mailx -s 'test' someone@somewhere.com

I can ping the IP address so I added it to the /etc/hosts file.

But when I try to send i still get the following error...

Any ideas...

TIA for any replys.

Thomas

All the responses were very good and helpful in troubleshooting the problem.

Richard Write gave me some good info on how to test using telnet using port 25 to \
determine if it is a firewall issue.

Email uses port 25. If you can ping a mail server, then try this test next.
"telnet somewhere.com 25" You should see something like this...
telnet somewhere.com 25
Trying...
Connected to somewhere.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 somewhere.com ESMTP CommuniGate Pro 3.5.2
(hit ctrl-] at this point)
telnet> quit
Connection closed.

...If you get nothing, or "connection refused" then there is a problem with
either port 25 traffic getting through or with the "somewhere.com" server
accepting email connections from you.

Scott D Thornberry suggested I try using sendmail -v to send.

You can try a sendmail -v name@domain.com <enter>
test<enter>
. <enter>

This showed exactly what was happening and the problem is right at the email \
provider.

And all the other suggestions were helpful as well.

Thanks to all who replied.

Thomas
