You can explore the Trac database using the "component" field in the
tickets. For example, all open tickets in the "kernel" component:

https://dev.haiku-os.org/query?status=assigned&status=in-progress&status=new&status=reopened&component=%5ESystem%2FKernel

Not all of them are easy to fix.

Maybe it is worth looking in the "file systems", "drivers", and
"system/runtime_loader" too (the runtime loader is tasked with loading
and executing programs, which may be relevant to some of your project
ideas).

Hi,

Two proposals will allow us to choose your "alternate" one in case there
is another good student applying to the same ideas as you. However, it
is of course more research work from you, so it depends if you have the
time to handle two proposals rather than just one.

Some information about how we handle mentoring: we try to limit the
direct communication between a student and his mentor. We require that
most discussions happen either in public mailing lists (such as this
one) or, for issues that shouldn't be made public, on a private mailing
list where all the mentors are available. For all technical discussions,
it is fine to use this haiku-development mailing list, where you can
reach most of our knowledgeable developers. Not all of them are GSoC
mentors, for lack of time, but they can certainly take the time to
answer your questions about our kernel and operating system.
