Is that use case that relevant in practice? Why wouldn't I use the BIOS 
boot volume selector or -- if this is a permanent installation -- some 
primary boot menu/loader?

That aside, switching to KMessage for the data transfer is probably a 
good idea. Not sure, if completely replacing the kernel_args structure 
-- which is used directly by quite a bit of code -- with KMessage or an 
archiving + unarchiving approach would be better, though.
