It appears that whoever made this release forgot to run gettextize first because
most of the gettext files are missing:

    ...
    checking whether NLS is requested... no
    sed: can't read ./po/po2tbl.sed.in: No such file or directory
    ./configure: ./po/POTFILES.in: No such file or directory
    checking build system type... i586-pc-linux-gnu
    ...
    creating po/Makefile.in
    sed: can't read ./po/Makefile.in.in: No such file or directory
    creating docs/Makefile
    ...
