I'm fooling with a GtkVTree widget in the CVS 'scratchpad' module that
will address this problem. (For anything sizable, "hard" is an
understatement - more like "impossible.") 

It's a pretty hard widget to write though, I have a bunch of un-checked-in
fiddling around. I'll probably have to rewrite some things once I write
them...
