According to the gcc info pages, -mminimal-toc will only insert one 
entry per file into the TOC space.

I'm porting a program at the moment where -mno-fp-in-toc and -mno-
sum-in-toc make little difference, but -mminimal-toc works great.

I haven't, however, as I said earlier tried to compile gtk...
But I think it's worth a try.
