I take it you meant  gst-launch playbin uri=http://... ?

This does indeed seem to 'hang' prerolling. It does post a "redirect"
message with the new location on the bus (try gst-launch -m), totem will
pick that up and act on it, but gst-launch does not. qtdemux should
probably also post an error message after the redirect message so that
apps which don't handle the redirect know that streaming has stopped. 

You should probably file a bug about this in bugzilla, thanks.
