Follow-up Comment #1, bug #54671 (project grub):

Addendum: Even the resolution of a variable would be expendable, because a
host-individual string can be deposited during installation and remains
constant. 
Solely the dynamic value reference for "GRUB_DEFAULT" would be the desired
killer feature ,-)
