In case anyone finds it interesting, NFS really is dreadful.

I did the same build, on the same quiescent machine, one on a local
disc, one on an NFS mounted disc:

Local disc: Total time: 2 minutes 20 seconds

NFS mount: Total time: 5 minutes 31 seconds

The moral is clear, and really rather bad news :-(
