Yep, that is what it is supposed to do. Notice that you only have 2
cycles after turning on the GPS? The GPS needs WAY more time than that
to get a good lock.
You need to run gpsd with the -n flag so that the GPS is kept running
all the time. And you need to get a newer version of gpsd, yours looks
old.

Nope. Your trace shows gpsd read the pulse just fine.

Pretty much anything you can throw at a serial port will work.

You do not even need NMEA, you just need a complete time, date and year.
