Unfortunately I don't think it'll be that easy - I've spent some time
mucking about in gdb to figure out what is going on, and the identity
string that the USB protocol is returning is blank...  I haven't dug
deep enough yet to figure out why...   But it certainly isn't as easy as
a different ident string being returned when plugged in...

I tried hard-wiring the identity string, in case it was *only* the ident
string that was broken, and I got the messages:

canon: check_readiness()
canon: dir_tree()
gp_port: gp_port_usb_msg_write: msg_write error
Status: Could not obtain directory listing
gPhoto2 reported the error 'Unspecified error'

instead...   So it looks like the problem runs a little deeper - I
haven't had time to dig any deeper into it...

sounds like it might be a good modification even if it doesn't fix this
problem...
