OK, this can be done.  I have successfully fetched the faq module

That is a happy accident.

Yes, it does.

It sounds, then, as though there are zero problems with the cvs-fast-export
conversion itself as it is.  The contributor map is complete; the author
map still needs to be merged.  I still need the ancient-release tarballs.
