Thanks Karl,

the TERMLIBS idea got it to compile without problems.

TERMLIBS="-lX11" ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --without-qt 
--with-wx=/usr/libexec/compat-wxGTK3-gtk2/

Thanks for sharing your deeper understanding of  automake magic.

It seems like you have come up against this before. Is there something 
that needs changing/fixing here?
