This is not a bug -- it's simply a problem we have to live with.  The
difficulty arises from the fact that gnuplot computes the position of a
label based upon the number of characters in the text string -- it does not
know what the terminal driver is going to do with that text string, so it
does not know how long the text string will actually be.

In the case of "set ylabel", you will probably get better results by not
including the font inside the string:
    set ylabel '%g' "Helvetica,12"

Or have I misunderstood your problem?
