According to "help set key", you can achieve #2 by using the "samplen"
option on "set key".

There seems to be no font control on "set key", however. So you have two
options (that I can think of offhand). One is to use the postscript
terminal, which has an enhanced syntax that lets you change fonts within a
string. The other is to change the default fontsize on the "set terminal"
command for the terminal you're using. This will of course change the size
of all text on the plot, so you'll need to use the explicit font controls on
commands like "set title" to restore that text to its previous size.
