Extended SMTP (ESMTP) has supported the "8BIT" command for many many
years. This allows the transsport of unencoded binary data across mail
streams. See RFC-3030 for the latest on this.

Similarly, the RFC-2045, which is the latest that descibes MIME types,
defines several different Content-Transfer-Encodings for mail messages.
Two of these are "8bit" and "Binary", which mean basically mean "raw
data".
