Just found more info, automake is indeed using the --posix option to tar:
/bin/sh /tmp/gpgme/missing --run tar chf - gpgme-0.4.7 --posix | GZIP=--best gzip -c >gpgme-0.4.7.tar.gz
This is due to a Debian backport of a patch for automake 1.7. Uff.
It seems that automake 1.9 will offer some flexibility to select the
tar format to use. The Debian maintainer of automake unilaterally
made a bogus decision. This is quite annoying.
At least I know now where this is coming from, so I can prevent it
from happening again.
Thanks,
Marcus
