My confusion stem from this remark:

`-Wunused'
     All the above `-Wunused' options combined.

     In order to get a warning about an unused function parameter, you
     must either specify `-Wextra -Wunused' (note that `-Wall' implies
     `-Wunused'), or separately specify `-Wunused-parameter'.
