first of all read the dawn documenation. Second the status bar isn't
'on' per default. Then use the copy mode to scroll back. And you can
configure your xterm to do *not* jump back on tty output:

 from my .Xdefaults:

	XTerm*scrollTtyOutput:		off

You can also turn it off by holding ctrl down and pressing the middle
mouse button and unselect the check mark before 'Scroll to Bottom on TTY
