Hello,

I am pleased to announce the release of GNU mtools version 4.0.10.

GNU mtools is available for download from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mtools and the mirror sites worldwide (see
http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html for the list of those):

  ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mtools/mtools-4.0.10.tar.gz (461K)
  ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mtools/mtools-4.0.10.tar.bz2 (373K)

The same directory also contains pre-compiled Debian and RPM packages.

Mtools is a collection of utilities to access MS-DOS disks from Unix
without mounting them, to change FAT-specific file attributes
(hidden, archive, system), and to format FAT media.

Mtools supports Win'95 style long file names, FAT32, OS/2 Xdf disks
and 2m disks (store up to 1992k on a high density 3 1/2 disk). Mtools
also includes mpartition, a simple partitioning programing to setup
Zip and Jaz media on non-PC machines (SunOs, Solaris, HP/UX, ...). It
is also a convenient tool to work with disk image files (thanks to the
-i flag).

Since version 4.0.0 mtools now has (the long awaited...) full support
for Unicode filenames.

For more information on mtools, including links to file downloads,
please see the mtools web page:
http://www.gnu.org/software/mtools/intro.html

Please email bugs or suggestions to <info-mtools@gnu.org>.

This is the first release of mtools to be officially a GNU package.

I'd like to thank all the people who made this possible:

 - Richard M Stallman for officially dubbing mtools a GNU package on
March 3rd 2009 :-)
 - Karl Berry for his support, for his patience in coaching me making
the necessary adjustments (copyright statements, standard command line
options, doc, etc.), and for his help with the migration to the new site.
 - Emmet Gray, initial developer of mtools, for giving his agreement to
include it in GNU (and for having made it to begin with!)
 - ... and many others who contributed to mtools over the past years
by sending patches, reporting bugs, giving feedback, ...

Improvements since the 4.0.9 release are:

* Fixed some copyright notices
* Fixed issue with max filesize (was erroneously 2G instead of 4GB-1)
* Warn early about files that are too large, rather than only stopping
after 4GB-1 have already been copied

Important improvements since 4.0.0. are:

* Compatibility fixes with OS/2, ARM, NetBSD and Solaris

Regards,

Alain
