Subject: Sound for events inconsistent

My Gnome installation seems unable to recognize login as a sound event.
It can play sounds for other events, but not for login, button-click,
menu item activation, or check box toggled. Has anyone else experienced
this?
Also, the sound server is occasionally knocked out for some reason
issuing the "/dev/dsp: device or resource busy" error. The only way I
have found to restart the sound server is to reboot the computer.
Although it seems to happen after using Gnome as root, fuser /dev/dsp
reports nothing. Any ideas about what might be causing this or how I can
correct it without rebooting?
Thanks in advance for any help I might receive.
Regards,
Syd.
