There's an applet in Helix GNOME at least called the GNOME screen
shooter.  It puts a small applet on your GNOME panel with which you can
grab the whole screen, just one window, or an arbitrary area.  I have no
idea what other distributions of GNOME include this.  You could download
just this one applet and install it yourself, of course.
