Most Linux distributions include ImageMagick, and you can do, e.g.

mkdir precious-originals
cp -a *.jpg precious-originals
mogrify -geometry 500x500 -filter Cubic -sharpen "25%" *.jpg

(This will also work on OS X; in both cases you may need to install
imagemagick)

If the files are GIMP-native (xcf, xcf.gz, etc) then use one of the
various gimp batch processors - there's one called David's Batch
Processor on gimp.org.
