OK, so if it is gutenprint you are using, then that is a trouble with the
PCL driver, not with the OS.

gutenprint is not dependent on the OS. I'm not surprised Apple or HP do not
know about the functionality of gutenprint, or its limitations, unless the
respective staff are followers of this mailing list.

Unfortunately, since the PCL driver is not maintained, there is little hope
for getting colour printing to work.
You might try a different PCL driver. The OpenPrinting site has a page on
this model and recommends
cdj970" or "pcl3" instead of the default "pcl-900" model:
http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-DeskJet_5550

Another thing you can try, if it will install on your system, is to use the
ported HPIJS package for MacOSX:
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosxhpijs#Printers
This is originally a linux package but was ported to MacOSX and is reported
to work on at least Lion (10.9) so it may well work on 10.10 and 10.11 also
(maybe need to use the special install method for 3rd-party apps required
from 10.10 onwards---see MacOSX forums for support on this if you need).
This package will support the Deskjet 5550 also in colour.

Best regards,
Gernot Hassenpflug
