For this to work you need to enable color dynamic on some input as
well. and its not recent, its so ever since the new dynamics were put
in place. Both gradient and and fade suffer from this double enabling
quirk. the old dynamics just overrode the gradient switch in the tool
options. If there was a color maping it worked. My plan to remove the
enabling tick-boxes wasn't accepted and nobody has really proposed
another workable plan yet so it sits and waits for a bright idea.
