IMO it's unnecessary to port or write a kernel-based membership service,
period. Even if the DLM is in the kernel, the membership agent can
reasonably run in user space because - unlike DLM ops - membership
transitions are relatively rare. Just a little bit of plumbing between the
user-space daemon and the kernel-space DLM, and voila!

This is exactly the approach we used in HACMP/6000 at Clam. It made the
implementation and debugging of complex protocol and other behavior in the
cluster manager (which handled membership) much easier, and nobody ever
found reason to complain about performance or responsiveness.
