ok, since the trace option didn't reproduce the error i tried dumping
the tcp traffic, which showed me, that the DELE command is correctly
sent and that the server ACKs it with a "OK.Message.deleted". So it had
to be something with my config. I found the following: As i intend to
start getmail by cron later, i always started it manually as user root
with the user option in the config. in the logs i found

----------------logbegin-----------------------------------------
operation error during quit (failure opening
/root/.getmail/oldmail-MYSERVER-110-MYUSER.tmp.88646 ([Errno 2]
-----------------logend-------------------------------------------

that directory of course did not exist, it exists in the homefolder of
the user given in the user option in the config file. after creating
that directory, the error did not occur any longer and the messages are
deleted properly!

PS: just wondering, why the DELE is ACKed, but not really carried out...
