To deliver to mboxes with getmail 3, you can use an external MDA (like
mail.local, mail, or whatever).  The better solution, of course, is to switch
to maildir format...

Yes, mutt (see mutt.org).  It's more powerful, more flexible, and less buggy
than pine -- you'll never go back.
