Absolutely, go for it!

For running Gentoo the machine surely would be fast enough, for compiling
it you could let it use the nights...  :-)

I recently installed SuSE 9.1 on a Pentium II, 300 MHz, 196 MB RAM
which is not as good as your machine: everything including newest KDE
and OpenOffice 1.1.1 is running nicely there.  OK, startup times are
of course longer than on a fast machine, but I can stand it: runtime
behavior of the programs is really fine.
