I was trolling the web yet again for something that may explain this and
came upon a discussion about ntpd and a particular 'polling' issue
bugzilla filed on version 4.2.0. So I checked my emerge logs and, lo and
behold, 4.2.0 was emerged on Feb 15, somewhere around when I started
having problems. I have now downgraded to 4.1.2 and all is working very
well again. I am such an idiot...I should have checked for a recent
upgrade first but honestly did not remember doing that upgrade.
