Anti-aliasing in GTK apps is controlled, if I remember, by the "GDK_USE_XFT" 
environment variable -- ' export GDK_USE_XFT=1 ' turns it on, ' export 
GDK_USE_XFT=0 ' turns it off...you will need to restart the app in question 
after changing the variable.  You can put it into whatever "auto-run" type 
file you would like (/etc/profile for all users, .bashrc, .xinitrc, whatever 
is appropriate for your setup) so that you can have it always on or off, as 
well...
