All,

As you may know, we have been having many problems with getting a kernel
boot on sparc32 which was compiled with gcc-3.2.1. After talking it over
on #gentoo-sparc, the idea of making a gcc-2.95.3 for building kernels
on sparc32 was proposed. Well, i asked Cretin to help out and now we have
one. Please test.. http://cvs.gentoo.org/~cretin/kgcc/
It compiles fine on my Ultra 30...

/usr/bin/kgcc ---version
2.95.3

The idea is this kgcc being a smaller version of gcc-2.95.3, it could be
used to build/compile kernels on sparc32. I've just started bootstrap on
my ss5 so it will be a few days until i can test this myself.

Also, I've noticed the on ibiblio... releases/1.4_rc1/sparc/* have time-
stamps of Dec 18th. Did someone update these? These tarballs seem to work
for me on my ss5. Alron's did not. I get a "kernel too old" error when tying
to create a chroot. If someone did update these, then please post a mail
to this mailing list next time. Thanks.

Lastly, we now have a releases/1.4_rc2 for ppc and x86 but not sparc. It
would be good to put all our newer stage tarballs. Speaking of tarballs...
do we have an ETA for an ISO? I would like to test one sometime soon :)

Once my ss5 is up ad running, I'll be able to make stage tarballs for
sparc32 and hopefully a kernel for the ISO. I'll also be working on the
install guide over the next few days. I'll be working on these tasks
full time over the next week or so.

Lastly, i hope many of you are tracking down bugs. We have less then a
dozen last time i checked. Keywords still need to done. Those ebuilds
with ~sparc need to be tested and confirmed stable. Once we've confirmed
that, we will change them to sparc. Two useful tools to do that are
portigate.py at cvs.gentoo.org/~gerk and swedishchef at gentoo-src/nall.
You can also see the swedishchef in action at /~nall. We really need
to work on this. If you need some help, let me know.

Happy Holidays,
