Are you using a serial console? If so, then your system doesn't have 
access to enough entropy. You'll see the same symptoms in similar 
operations like gathering entropy for Apache's mod_digest or GnuPG 
keys.

Some network and disk-layer drivers are starting to build entropy 
collections, but as far as I know we're still out of luck in SPARC 
land.

The only short-term solution of which I'm aware is to attach a 
keyboard and mouse to your machine and run X on it. Then you'll get 
all the randomness you need.

ps: I'd love it if someone corrected me on all this! Obviously, I'm
     seeing the same symptoms.
