Maybe this can be the note on this. Mike Harris (redhat/xfree86)
indicates that xfree86/sunffb should be incorporating an official fix
for your problem.
It's too bad I didn't read the error indication from xfree startup
literally in the first place. It was telling us exactly what was failing,
but I didn't pick up on it.
Please let me know how it goes.

It's not far from the truth, prior to the bug report address
being converted into a public mailing list. IMHO of course.

I noticed in the CHANGELOG that your fix is committed to CVS now:
866. The sunffb driver was treating a function with a void return value
as if it had a Bool return value. This causes the driver to fail
in some cases (#A.1588, Ferris McCormick).
