I've p.masked media-sound/daapd and it's pending removal in a week from now if 
nobody says anything.

The reason of this is that it seems to cause crashes in iTunes 6 clients (see 
bug #109490), and it's dead upstream. Instead of this, you can use mt-daapd 
that is actively maintained by upstream, and seems to work just fine with new 
version of iTunes clients.

Note: the big drawback of mt-daapd not being able to cross different 
filesystem bounds can be worked around using more than one mt-daapd service.
Next version (0.3.0) will anyway fix that definitively.
