Shouldn't that be /etc/portage/profile/virtuals? Based on various
comments, I created a place-holder file (as I did with all the
/etc/portage/* stuff, so I can find it when I need to use it) directly
under /etc/portage when I switched to .51, and portage squawked that said
location was depreciated, listing profiles/virtuals as the new location.
The current .51 questions/comments thread says that should be profile
(singular) not profiles.
