Most of the times these garbled up screens are caused by the graphics card 
being in a broken/inconsistent state. Unfortunately a reboot often seems 
the only way to get the card in a consistent state again. These 
inconsistent states are normally caused by conflicting drivers or race 
conditions. They occur normally when switching virtual consoles between 
graphics mode and text mode. Framebuffer code is notorious for causing 
these kinds of problems, and some drivers don't even need help. If you 
use a framebuffer, it is also prudent to make the X driver aware of this 
by supplying the relevant option in the device section of xorg.conf.
