I've had some problems with gdesklets recently as well, from what I
could tell it was a three way problem. 
1. pygtk being to recent. 
2. I've had little luck running any of the desklets from portage on
> =gdesklets-core-0.32 3. 
3. (possible) improper permissions on some /usr/share/gdesklets, though
I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I've thought of a few things to try but to date have not done so myself,
so I'll pass them on to you.

1. emerge =gnome-extra/gdesklets-core-0.26.2
	- AFAICT there are some big differences between gdesklets-core-0.2x and
gdesklets-core-0.3x. And I suspect alot of these changes may have broken
alot of the older displays/sensors

2. emerge gdesklets-core (most recent), remove any desklets installed
from x11-misc, and use only newer displays/sensors found on
http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/

3. Test if pygtk-2.0 2.2 2.4 or 2.6 make any difference at all.
