You're right.

This won't work

And this won't work either.

I found out, that the problem is in /etc/security/pam_env.conv and has 
nothing to do with the kdm (or any other display manager) settings.

After commenting out the lines with DISPLAY, REMOTEHOST and XAUTHORITY 
everything works fine.
