You could also look at the source for the applets that come with
gnome-base/gnome-applets and gnome-base/gnome-panel. Some of the simpler
ones, particularly mailcheck-applet, clock-applet, and geyes_applet2
would be perfect simple templates for rendering simple text or a simple
graphic in an applet.
