My guess about the issue is that some programs will install a mozilla 
plug-in and not do it intelligently so normally only mozilla would pick 
it up.  So if it isn't installed, then firefox won't get the plug-in 
properly.   This is just my /feeling/ and it may not necessarily reflect 
reality.
