Thanks for your reply! I will try some of the things you mention, but I have 
no experience playing with ebuilds... now seems like a good time to try ;)

As a matter of fact it seems I wasn't 100% accurate about debian doing a 
gnome-version of this package. I now modify my statement: there is another 
quickstart package called ooqstart, which has gnome support.

I will have a look in portage to see if this is there, and if not maybe make 
a suggestion in bugzilla or something.
