Mike,

Its just happened again, exactly as i started up Nautilus.

I've found

(nautilus:21440): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Deprecated function.  User 
modifications to the MIME database are no longer supported.

repeated over and over in the .xsession-error if that helps at all. 
Nautilus took ages to appear (had to click a few times before it did too 
- waited before trying again)

famd is still running at the moment.

Dunno if you'll be able to suggest anything or not.
